Tour de France

Colingua has been the Tour de France’s trusted partner for translations of its official communications into English, Spanish, German and Dutch since 2006.

>>> With over 100 TV channels broadcasting the race in 190 countries (60 of them live), the Tour de France is the third biggest sporting event in the world after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Our translators’ tasks have changed over the years to keep up with the needs of the organisers (A.S.O.) and the latest technological advances: for a decade, our professionals have translated live updates on the official race website (which had 36 million unique visitors in 2016) into German and Spanish and, more sporadically, into English. However, an event like the Tour generates a year-round media buzz, so our translators are busy long before and after the three weeks of live action, working closely together with A.S.O. to translate press releases and the many nuggets of behind-the-scenes information on the race and its organisation published throughout the year. As a result of technological advances, our company now translates the Tour’s mobile app and the official mobile games built around the race

This unique experience has given Colingua the know-how necessary for the specialised translation of large-scale international sporting events. Indeed, Colingua lends its expertise to other international sporting events (see partial list below), many of which are organised by A.S.O.

Although translations represent the lion’s share of our partnership with the Tour de France, our conference interpreters are also involved. Our interpretation agency has also been working with the Tour for several years. For example, we provided interpretation from booths into 5 languages during the team briefing ahead of the Grand Départ of the Tour in Liège in 2012, we dispatched interpreters to Chartres for Bradley Wiggins’s official interview prior to his apotheosis on the Champs-Élysées, and we were there in Bern in 2016 when the Tour visited Switzerland and the revival of the Deutschland Tour was announced.

Also in cycling, our Brussels branch provided simultaneous interpretation for Fabian Cancellara’s farewell event, held at the Kuipke velodrome in Ghent.
